LIMEDROP INTERVIEW: Fiona Simmons August 18 2014

Today Limedrop had the pleasure of speaking with Fiona Simmons. Q&A with Fiona Simmons. Who you are? What do you do/ believe in? I am Fiona Simmons, I make all kinds of things - drawings, ceramics, jewellery- you name it, i want to make it. What your top two tips in making? Always make more- its good for you. Productivity comes from positivity, so i try and drop the ego and make things that make me feel good.  What is something that you thought was impossible and is now possible? I went away once, 2012, I knew it was the right thing to do at the time, but for no reason at all. I got a one way ticket to the states and decided I needed to become the person I wanted to be. I ended up in LA, SF and NYC (with a strange trip to Sweden in the middle that was incredibly eye opening). I found an artist in NYC that I liked who was doing a cool project I wanted to know more about, asked if i could interview him, Mike Perry, and he said yes for no reason. We met, I asked if I could help with his new project and some how over time became the co-producer of the Wondering Around Wandering Exhibition in Crown Heights Brooklyn. I met people who believed in me, who gave me room to grow and be myself.  I met a neighborhood that embraced me. I would never have expected to feel like I fit in at all in a city like NYC, but they understood my work ethic and were into it. Sounds so trite but I found my true self there (every real and ugly and cool parts of myself), and managed to bring it back to Melbourne with me. Now I work harder than ever to make in all of my time- because its what makes me happy, it makes me whole and its everything I want to do all the time! Not so much a story of impossible to possible but unexpected to real life!
